Inside the Mind of Casey Jerez

Spanish...

In addition to persuing my degree in English, I have also worked towards a minor in Spanish. I will admit that my writing in Spanish is nowhere near the skill level of my English writing; because it is my second language, I often have to focus more on the basics, and creativity falls on the backburner. However, having reached above the intermediate level, I am now proud of much of the writing I have done. In the future, I hope to be able to express myself in Spanish just as well as I do in English.

Blas de Otero

Picture
In my first Hispanic Literature course, we spent the first few weeks studying poetry. This paper is an analysis of the poem "Basta" by Blas de Otero. This poem spoke of the love man has for God, and how sad life would be without the promise of something better after death. It was beautiful to read, and I can only hope that my analysis did it justice.

La Navidad de Muerte

Picture
This piece was really fun to write. I collaborated with my classmates, Jennifer Duvivier and Brian Brown, to write this Spanish play about a world in which Santa Claus is a corrupt, maniacal business man who mistreats his elves. We spent a huge amount of energy on this piece, and it was truly awesome to be able to write something so creative in another language. After writing this play, we performed it for our classmates.
