Inside the Mind of Casey Jerez

My Academic Work...

I have always enjoyed taking on challenging writing assignments for my classes. I often find that writing an essay or a paper about a subject gives me the chance to explore it from different angles and discover things that I may not previously have known. Below are a few of the papers I have written for various classes throughout my college career.

Lolita

I wrote this paper for an American Literature course. We were given a lot of freedom on this assignment; we simply had to choose one of the novels we had read and discuss any aspect of it. Having just seen Stanley Kubrick's film version of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, I chose to address the contrast between the film and the book. I really enjoyed writing this paper because it is my personal belief that too many young people would rather watch film adaptations of novels rather than reading the classics for themselves. This paper explores the consequences that can occur from doing so.

Biracialism in Southern Literature

Picture
During the Spring semester of my Junior year, I took a very interesting course in Southern literature. One theme that many Southern authors explored was the difficulty of defining "race" in the South. For many of the characters in the novels we read, such as Faulkner's Light in August, being biracial was a cause for lonliness and confusion. What is a man to do when he cannot identify with any one "race"? In this paper, I discussed the hardships of some of Southern literature's famous biracial characters.
